THE STORY BEHIND VALRUE
ValRue is named in honor of Phasha’s mother, Valarie, known as Val, and her grandmother, LaRue. ValRue Advisory is rooted in the legacy of two women who helped shape the leader she is.
Their influence lives in more than the name. It is reflected in the way Phasha shows up: with warmth, empathy, courage, and conviction in what is possible for the people and organizations she serves.

MEET THE FOUNDER

Founder & Principal Advisor
Phasha Spencer brings a discerning eye for opportunity and a talent for building the relationships that turn ambition into results. As Founder and Principal Advisor of ValRue Advisory, she partners with nonprofits, businesses, and mission-driven leaders to sharpen strategy, strengthen partnerships, and grow sustainable revenue.
Her approach draws on more than 18 years of nonprofit and social impact leadership and firsthand experience balancing ambitious goals with the daily demands of running an organization. In her previous role as Executive Director of Playworks Illinois, she revitalized board engagement, increasing giving participation from 40% to 100% and securing $45,000 in board contributions. At EdReports, she helped build the organization’s business development function and grew its partnership portfolio by 50% across six regions, managing contracts ranging from $250,000 to $500,000.
Known for her warmth, wit, and strategic instincts, Phasha sees possibility in people, relationships, and organizations. Her approach deepens trust, opens doors, and creates opportunities for others. She listens with curiosity, recognizes patterns, and asks thoughtful questions that surface underlying challenges, reveal untapped strengths, and clarify the path forward. Her clients gain a candid thought partner who invests in their success, brings clarity to difficult decisions, and turns insight into action.
Phasha serves on the Chicago Urban League Women’s Board and remains deeply engaged in Chicago’s civic and philanthropic community. A proud alumna of Norfolk State University, an HBCU, Phasha earned her bachelor’s degree in mass communications there and her master’s degree in journalism from Roosevelt University. Phasha sharpened her strategic expertise by completing the Corporate Strategy executive education program at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Named for her mother, Valarie “Val,” and grandmother, LaRue, ValRue honors the women who shaped how Phasha leads: with courage, resolve, care, and consistency.

RESULTS IN PRACTICE
During her tenure as Executive Director of Playworks Illinois, Phasha reimagined and scaled the region’s signature fundraiser, a flagship kickball tournament, strengthening partnerships across diverse industries and expanding sponsorship to drive fundraising growth.
This is the approach Phasha brings to ValRue: connecting relationships to a clear revenue strategy and turning existing opportunities into stronger results.
IN THEIR WORDS
“Phasha brings a rare combination of passion for mission-driven work and a practical, business-minded approach to nonprofit leadership. I saw firsthand her ability to recruit and engage a strong board, overcome barriers, and deliver results. One example is that Phasha led the charge in helping us exceed our recruitment and fundraising goals for our annual Signature Fundraiser in back-to-back years. She is thoughtful, transparent, and never hesitates to roll up her sleeves alongside the team to get the work done.”
“Working alongside Phasha in a board leadership capacity, I saw firsthand her exceptional leadership and fundraising skills. She made an immediate impact, helping us significantly exceed our fundraising goals year after year. She is a driven, innovative fundraiser and networker who knows how to mobilize the right people at the right time. Beyond the numbers, Phasha builds genuine connections with everyone around her, is wonderful to collaborate with, and has a real talent for holding people accountable in a way that drives success.”
“Working with Phasha gave me firsthand experience with the strategic thinking she now brings to ValRue Advisory. She helped me see how strong relationships, clear strategy, and intentional execution can work together to create sustainable, mission-aligned growth. Under her leadership, I built a pipeline of more than 150 organizational partners and exceeded my annual training revenue goal, generating over $242,000 against a $180,000 target. Her ability to turn opportunity into actionable strategy is what makes her an invaluable partner to organizations looking to grow with purpose.”
“Phasha's relationship-building skills are unmatched. She doesn't just cultivate relationships for her own benefit. She's a natural at seeing around corners for those she's connected to and putting others in a position to win by forming purposeful partnerships. She attended an event with a community of people she thought I'd fit well with and didn't hesitate to invite me to the next one, simply so I could experience the community for myself. At that event, I connected with the president of a university and their chief of staff, and that connection turned into a strong lead for a scholarship for my doctorate. It was a life-changing opportunity, all because of her gift for caring for others.”
“Phasha has a gift for this. She listens closely, brings people's own words back into the conversation, and connects one person's experience to another's, so the whole group ends up thinking together. And she does it with real warmth. She lives what she teaches, and it's inspiring to be around.”
